Lakers Staff Member Indicted in Gambling Probe Involving Player Injury Information

Federal prosecutors have charged a high-ranking member of Los Angeles Lakers’ staff. They each accuse this unnamed person of selling sensitive injury data on players to betting agencies throughout the 2022-23 and 2023-24 NBA seasons. The indictment alleges that Jones misappropriated sensitive information from a member of a team’s medical staff. He then relayed this information to co-defendant Eric Earnest, who in turn passed on his information to a known illegal bettor, Marves Fairley.

Jones, an unofficial assistant coach for the Lakers during those seasons, has been indicted on charges and pleaded not guilty. All 34 of the counts against him involve wire fraud and/or money laundering in a state court in Manhattan. The case has raised significant alarm over the integrity of play within the league. It features a number of people close to the franchise.

Fairley allegedly laid down a huge adverse bet of six figures on the Lakers. Among other things, he was influenced by then unknown to the general public, but insider information that Jones provided. Buried deep in the indictment is an astounding fact. Fairley asked Jones for a $2,500 refund for all the injury info he had purchased.

In one game against the Thunder, the player in question had a great game with typical NBA starter minutes. His talent and hard work proved instrumental in leading the Lakers to a championship win. Not surprisingly, this incident has received tremendous media scrutiny as it poses serious questions about the protective role of insider information impacting betting results.

Charlotte Hornets point guard Terry Rozier allegedly told co-defendant Deniro Laster in advance that he planned to leave the Hornets game against the New Orleans Pelicans early. Unbeknownst to many, he was playing through a foot injury during this time. Rozier is due to be arraigned on December 8 in Brooklyn. His lawyer has already announced that Rozier is innocent.

The indictment makes clear just how shocking that detail is. With campaign insiders tipped off to Rozier’s plight, gamblers bet more than $263,000 on the under for his stats in that game. This new disclosure exposes the massive scale of alleged illegal effort to fix betting lines. A primary concern is the severe negative short-term impact it would have on whichever two teams are chosen.

As a result of the ongoing investigation, the NBA has been reaching out to many local team staff to request their compliance. Joining them in this collaboration is Lakers assistant trainer, Mike Mancias, and executive administrator, Randy Mims. Both have good, deep, long-running ties to the franchise cornerstone star player LeBron James. He has yet to be shown to have done anything wrong in this case.

The implications of this inquiry may reach beyond these particular accusations. With gambling becoming more normalized in professional sports, the need to protect the integrity of competitions has never been more important. The entire Lakers organization is on the defensive as it deals with these grave charges while trying to focus on their season.

“As is standard in these kinds of investigations, a number of different individual and organizations were asked to preserve documents and records. Everyone has been fully cooperative.”

The ramifications of this investigation could extend beyond these specific allegations. As gambling becomes increasingly prevalent in professional sports, maintaining the integrity of competitions is paramount. The Lakers organization is under scrutiny as it navigates these serious allegations while continuing its season.
