Lakers Falter Late Against Hornets Despite James’ Heroics; Doncic Impresses

The Los Angeles Lakers faced off against the Hornets in a tense matchup, shooting a season-high 51 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc, converting just 15 for a 29.4% success rate. Despite LeBron James delivering a stellar performance with 26 points, 11 assists, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks, the Lakers struggled overall. Luka Doncic shone for the opposition, achieving a season-high with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists, demonstrating his prowess on the court.

The Lakers' challenge began with their shooting woes. James shot a modest 5-for-18 from the field and committed 6 turnovers, while Austin Reaves contributed 3-for-9 before his ejection in the third quarter after two technical fouls. Rui Hachimura added 17 points but had trouble from beyond the arc, going 1-for-8 and missing two crucial free throws in the final seconds.

Despite these setbacks, James found his rhythm in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting, including 2-for-3 from the three-point line. However, this effort wasn't enough to seal the victory as he missed two potential game-tying three-pointers in the closing moments.

"We run the set that JJ draws up," said LeBron James. "You execute it. And we executed it. We just didn't make it."

On the other side, Luka Doncic started with several turnovers but managed to stabilize his game. In the fourth quarter, he added 5 points on 2-for-5 shooting. Despite a strained left calf injury limiting his play since Christmas, Doncic's performance was commendable.

"He had it going, so obviously we're going to go to him," remarked Luka Doncic about his role in the clutch moments.

"I think it will go both ways. One time it's going to be him, one time me. So, I think it depends how the game is going," added Doncic, highlighting the interchangeable roles between him and his teammates.

The Lakers had two promising opportunities at the end of the game but failed to capitalize on either. Head coach JJ Redick expressed confidence in his players' ability to deliver when it matters most.

"But it felt like LeBron, particularly in the fourth, just found a nice rhythm and I felt really comfortable with that. And we got two good looks," stated Redick.

"As a coach, you're excited that you have two guys that can be the passer and be the guy who gets the pass," he continued.

Both teams dealt with injuries affecting their star players. LeBron James played despite a left ankle injury that sidelined him from the All-Star game, showcasing his dedication and resilience.
