Lakers Acquire Smart to Strengthen Defensive Lineup

The Los Angeles Lakers have finalized a deal to acquire Marcus Smart, the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year, solidifying their roster as they aim for a deeper playoff run. Smart, a seven-year veteran known for his elite point-of-attack wing defense, is headed to the Lakers. Before coming to Central Texas, the former Memphis Grizzlies and Washington Wizards guard missed the playoffs entirely in those two seasons.

Smart has also established himself as a dangerous defender, receiving three All-Defense first-team honors earlier in his career. His defensive skills will continue to be vital for the Lakers. That’s especially critical now with the loss of Dorian Finney-Smith, Luka’s vital do-everything defensive asset. Smart wasn’t a definite playoff solution on his own, but the Lakers understood they needed a player of his quality and went after him to address that need.

Beyond his defensive prowess, Smart’s experience and versatility would be a valuable addition to the Lakers’ lineup. In 30 total games with the Wizards, he averaged 3.9 points on 43.3% from the field. He collected 1.8 boards and handed out 1.3 assists a night. While he did only make one official start in Washington, his contributions were immensely important and appreciated. Now, though, he’s earning the opportunity for a much bigger role in Los Angeles.

Once they make the move to waive Shake Milton, that’ll clear the necessary roster spot to bring Smart in. This decision shows the direction the team wants to go with their defense and with the way they are putting together their roster. Smart’s arrival helps fortify the team’s goals for a deep run next season.

Even Luka Doncic, the Dallas Mavericks superstar and one of the league’s biggest stars, said he’d love to play alongside Smart. Doncic himself has expressed interest, and contacted him directly, letting him know that he wants to be on the same team as this elite defender. This endorsement only drives home Smart’s on the court impact and his on the court appeal as a player.

Smart’s new deal with the Lakers is for three years, with a player option on the final season. This provides him the flexibility to look for more profitable opportunities in free agency in 2026. This aspect of the deal reflects both Smart’s aspirations and the strategic planning of the Lakers’ management as they navigate their roster dynamics.
