Lahore pulled off an impressive upset victory over Peshawar in a rain-shortened match. This victory ensured their qualification to the Pakistan Super League (PSL) playoffs. Now, that landmark victory played out on Maidaan, Lahore’s titular ground, where the two sides were meeting in blistering heat. Rain cut the match down to a mere 13 overs each. This victory made Lahore clinch the third spot in the league points table and Peshawar ended its season being in fifth position.
In the one-sided final match, Fakhar Zaman was the star performer for Lahore. At number seven, he scored a blistering 60 runs off just 36 balls. His aggressive batting was paramount in the team giving their bowlers a tough total to defend. His solid innings ended when Daniel Sams dismissed him bowled out. While Sams did not take a wicket in that final, he played an enormous role with the bat in doing so.
Lahore had their difficulties, closing their innings at 149 for 8. The team saw swift contributions from several players, including Mohammad Naeem and Kusal Perera, who scored valuable runs to bolster the total. Asif Ali was another key contributor, smashing rapid runs to help steer the team’s innings in the right direction.
Peshawar, opting to chase after winning the toss, faced challenges early on and could only manage 123 for 8 in their allotted overs. Salman Mirza delivered a sensational performance to be Lahore’s trump card with the ball, taking four wickets for 31 runs. His stellar performance was key to keeping Peshawar’s balanced attack from scoring and giving Lahore the win that landed them in the final.
The match featured a notable ninth-wicket partnership of 32 runs between Daniel Sams and Mohammad Ali, who helped stabilize the innings towards the end. Despite Sams’ contribution with the bat, Peshawar could not recover from the pressure exerted by Lahore’s bowlers.
This victory launched Lahore into the playoffs. It provided them with the kind of momentum they will need as they head into the tournament’s later rounds. The last match of the league stage sees bottom-placed Karachi Kings take on Islamabad United. This clash will determine the top of the pack’s seedings heading into the playoffs.
