As a veteran offensive lineman, he’s fought on many disappointed offensive lines in his time. The 32-year-old NFL veteran last saw action in the league for the 2022 season, spending that season with the Cincinnati Bengals. After his release from the Bengals in early 2023, soon thereafter he signed on with the Buffalo Bills. The Bills released him at the end of training camp in 2024.
Collins’ time with the Cowboys was a great story. He was an iron man from 2015 to 2019, starting 71 out of a possible 74 games and returning to play in 2021. His time with Dallas was a testament to his versatility and reliability on the pitch. He ended the 2023 campaign on the Cowboys’ practice squad. Sadly, he was never called up to the active roster. After the offseason, Collins skipped retirement ceremonies for his former teammates Zack Martin and Tyron Smith at The Star. He appeared to be in phenomenal condition.
The Cowboys’ move to add Collins comes as the Cowboys are reeling from injuries to their starting offensive line, including Tyron Smith and La’el Collins. Through the first week of training camp, the team has already seen four players go down with injury. What happened was that their 6′ 6″ junior guard Rob Jones broke a bone in his neck. This injury will force him to miss the next two to three months. Tyler Smith left practice for precautionary reasons with knee soreness.
Todd Archer, NFL Nation reporter covering the Cowboys, shared Collins’ comeback as a win. This in turn is a strategic move to shore up a unit battered by injuries. The Cowboys are in dire need of quality veteran depth on the offensive line. Given this urgency, Collins’ performance will be very important to the team’s future success.
