Kyle Lowry, the veteran guard known for his tenacity and leadership on the court, will return for his 20th season in the NBA. This will be his third straight season with the Philadelphia 76ers. Lowry has signed a one-year contract. This further cements his place on the team as they turn the page to next season.
Even at 39 years old, Lowry is still one of the most impactful and important players in professional basketball. His time with Memphis, Houston, and Miami have helped him to acquire a wealth of relevant experience that he adds to the Hines/Quinn development. He’s most famous for his incredible tenure with the Toronto Raptors. Arguably during his entire career in Toronto, Lowry was an instrumental piece of the franchise’s first-ever title win in 2019.
Last year, Lowry faced some of the toughest times in his career on the court. He played in just 35 games and posted career lows across the board. He averaged just 3.9 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. His inability to win games despite these numbers doesn’t make the leadership qualities developed through that experience any less valuable for the 76ers.
Lowry’s agent, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, confirmed the deal for the new contract. The decision to re-sign with Philadelphia is emblematic of Lowry’s dedication to the Sixers and their goals to contend in the 2023-24 campaign. The 76ers, meanwhile, are hoping to get more of what they’ve seen already and shore up their title hopes with Lowry’s addition.
Lowry has shown his versatility throughout his career. He is equally comfortable playing a variety of roles and integrating into different team cultures. His professional journey started when the Memphis Grizzlies drafted him 24th overall in the 2006 NBA draft. This major step propelled his eventful career to fame and fortune. Since then, he’s grown into one of the league’s most dangerous and respected playmakers.
