The New York Knicks are reportedly bringing Mike Brown back for a second interview. He’s a very experienced coach with an incredible résumé, given his record at the helm of various NBA squads. In the application for Brown’s first interview, the Knicks hired Tom Thibodeau. Now, he has once again made waves with his astounding coaching resume.
Now at 55 years of age, Brown averages a career 455 wins against 304 losses. His rosters have made the playoffs in seven of the nine full seasons he’s been at the helm. This achievement demonstrates his ability to build competitive teams. His basketball IQ made him a two-time NBA Coach of the Year. He previously took home the award during the 2008-09 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers and in his first season with the Sacramento Kings in 2022-23.
Brown’s time in Cleveland, on his first of two terms there, was as notable as any, as he turned the Cavaliers into a perennial playoff team. He spent more than a full season as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. What he’s done recently with the Kings is particularly notable. He helped lead the franchise to end Sacramento’s NBA record 16-season playoff drought, and he produced a winning record in both of his full seasons with the franchise, finishing with an overall mark of 107-88 over parts of three seasons.
Brown achieved enough in his short tenure with the Kings. His tenure came to an abrupt end when the team fired him in December, one game before he completed the third season of his contract. His overall track record finally won him enough recent success to be one of three candidates still in the running for the Knicks’ coaching vacancy.
Meanwhile, the Knicks remain in search of coaching talent. They feel it is time for a prominent leader who can guide them back to playoff relevancy. Brown’s proven experience and history of effectiveness will be key for this critical role.
