Knicks Part Ways with Tom Thibodeau Sparking Mixed Reactions

On June 3, 2025, the New York Knicks announced that they had relieved Tom Thibodeau of his head coaching duties. This announcement was just days after the team lost its postseason berth. This decision is emblematic of a more profound shift for the francophone franchise. It’s the first time the Knicks have fired their head coach after advancing to the conference / division finals in the prior season.

When Tom Thibodeau came to the Knicks in 2020, he immediately shook things up within the organization. During his tenure, the squad clinched its first post-season series win since the 2000-01 campaign. In addition, they made it to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 23 years. The Knicks’ seventh game was a loss to the Indiana Pacers in Game 6 of the finals. Regardless of his exit, Thibodeau’s impact on the team is what has former players and fans split.

In a firestorm of social media backlash, a number of high profile NHL players and executives voiced their opinions on Thibodeau’s dismissal. Even Ben Stiller, high-profile Knicks superfan, tweeted out Thibodeau’s selection—evidence of his impact on the team’s return to relevance.

“I am a Tom Thibodeau fan. He brought this team back. I felt he gave every bit of himself and was always looking to improve. I will always be grateful for how far he brought the Knicks. They are relevant again. They are championship contenders again. The Knicks became winners…” – Ben Stiller

As expressed by former Knicks player Wilson Chandler. He followed up by saying that Thibodeau will always be an immortal to Knicks fans.

“Thibs no doubt will always be a Knicks legend though.” – Wilson Chandler

Thibodeau’s firing comes as discussions have begun about who should replace him. Names like Isaiah Thomas and Mike Malone are already starting to surface for the Knicks gig. It certainly came off that way when Thomas tried to defend Malone, starting the questioning by asking who else was out there for a candidate.

“Mike Malone gotta get that Knicks job! Who else is on the market?” – Isaiah Thomas

Issues leading up to Thibodeau’s firing have led to some biting criticism, especially about player exhaustion during important late-game situations. This was a point made by Allen Robinson II, as he looked back on the team’s struggles.

“Saw that coming, back to back season the Knicks loss due to fatigue. Can’t have guys playing 48 min then wonder why they go down.” – Allen Robinson II

Additionally, players around the league supported Thibodeau’s tenure, as did fans across the country. Jalen Brunson, a current Knicks player, affirmed his belief in Thibodeau’s capabilities despite the recent decision.

“Is that a real question right now? Did you just ask me if I believe that he’s the right guy? Yes.” – Jalen Brunson

Former NBAers Metta World Peace and Earvin “Magic” Johnson took to Twitter with their wonderful things to say about Thibodeau. They both pointed out his commitment and important work for the team in the last five years.
