Knicks Face Setback in Head Coach Search as Jay Wright Declines Interest

As the New York Knicks cast about for yet another new head coach (which became concrete after they fired Tom Thibodeau last week), Jon Rothstein, CBS Sports. On Monday, Jay Wright—former coach at Villanova—firmly communicated to the Knicks that he does not want the job. Notably, he’s been the defense’s biggest mentor to many of the team’s current starters. Thibodeau was relieved of his duties immediately after making New York’s first trip to the Eastern Conference finals in 25 years. Yet his departure became an inflection point to the adverse for the continued viability of that franchise.

Under Thibodeau’s tenure the Knicks had great success, but still the team’s front office felt it was time to move on. Whatever the motivation, the squad is seeking an up-and-coming replacement to take over where Thibodeau ran aground. He had been at the helm since 2020. Under Thibodeau’s leadership, the Knicks experienced a notable resurgence, culminating in their deep playoff run.

Wright’s decision to not even interview for the Knicks’ head coach gig should be seen as a huge blow for New York. He’s had a huge impact on the Knicks, as he coached three of their current starters during his tenure at Villanova. His experience and pre-existing rapport with these athletes could’ve gone a long way in providing some continuity and familiarity to a transitioning team. So far, Wright has chosen not to re-enter the coaching grind at the next level.

As Wright departs the scene, a small but diverse field of other candidates is surging. Ime Udoka, who just last year led the Houston Rockets to a 51-win season on the strength of their new No. Udoka’s first season wasn’t without hiccups, but his leadership helped Houston snap a four-year playoff drought. During this stretch, they earned the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. His track record of developing young talent and getting the best out of a roster could easily make him an appealing choice to New York.

Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch has become a surprisingly strong name to watch in this cycle. Finch has led the Wolves to their second straight conference finals this season. He has an unmatched resume in terms of developing players. His penchant for creating a competitive work environment might be just what the Knicks need from their next head coach.

New York stands at an important historical inflection point. They want a coach who can take Thibodeau’s established base and structure and take it to the next level through creativity and fresh ideas. Those are big stakes too, considering the franchise’s dream to get back to being a regular playoff contender again.
