Knicks and Raptors Resolve Lawsuit Over Coaching Staff Allegations

This week the New York Knicks and Toronto Raptors agreed to settle their ongoing legal tussle. That case was sparked by claims of ethical violations in the hiring of coach Ikechukwu Azotam. That’s why the lawsuit garnered international attention ever since it was filed. Both sides worked it out to mutual satisfaction and are looking ahead to a new season.

The Knicks were originally the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, which they first brought in August of 2023. The Raptors poached Azotam, who had been with the Knicks from 2020-2023. In their argument, the Knicks alleged that the Raptors instructed Azotam to leak confidential proprietary knowledge in order to secure a competitive advantage. According to the Knicks’ complaint, the Raptors aimed to “organize, plan, and structure the new coaching and video operations staff.”

In a recent court filing made in mid-October 2023, the Raptors filed a retaliatory accusation against the Knicks. They described the Knicks’ claims as a “meritless publicity stunt.” The lawsuit accuses the Toronto Raptors and their new head coach, Darko Rajaković. It names player development coach Noah Lewis and ten John Does as employer defendants.

The Raptors’ recruitment of Azotam is said to have started during the summer of 2023. The Knicks expressed their concerns with the drafting process. It wasn’t just that they thought this was a bad hiring decision, they viewed this as a deliberate attempt to undermine their standing in the league. The Knicks even petitioned NBA commissioner Adam Silver to intervene in and settle the dispute. They warned against the oversight, arguing it was done through a dirty trick.

In response to the Knicks’ claims, Raptors representatives repeatedly called for Silver’s involvement to mediate the dispute. Then all eyes turned to a judge in the U.S. Southern District Court in Lower Manhattan to hear an emergency appeal. He ultimately decided to pass the buck to Silver for a fix.

Eventually, both sides were able to come to an agreement where both teams would drop their claims.

“The Knicks and (Raptors owner Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment) withdrew their respective claims and the matter is resolved. The Parties are focused on the future.” – Spokespersons representing the teams

This resolution means that both franchises can now focus, distraction-free, on their respective preparations for the coming 2022-23 NBA season. The teams are looking ahead. They want to build the best talent and culture available so they can win in the famously cutthroat basketball industry.
