The Sacramento Kings will begin the 2023-2024 NBA season without their projected starting power forward, Keegan Murray, who suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). This injury is particularly impactful given where Murray is in his career, as he’s set to become eligible for a contract extension. The Kings, aiming to secure a playoff spot in the competitive Western Conference, will have to navigate the opening month of the season without one of their key players.
Murray, who is heading into his fourth season in the league, has proven to be a steady contributor since being selected with the No. In his first three seasons, he appeared in 233 of a possible 246 games. He’s begun all but two of those matches. Having hit a career total of 543 three-pointers, he has become one of the most important floor spacers for the Kings. His evolution into one of the best multi-purpose defenders on the wing has been remarkable. This ability is what makes him a key contributor on both sides of the court.
This severe enough injury, which will require surgery, will keep Murray out for the first ten games of the NBA regular season at minimum. He is due to be re-evaluated in four to six weeks after the surgery. This very brief period raises concerns about his accessibility. Just like the Kings, they are desperate to establish some positive vibes down in Sacramento as the early season progresses.
Murray’s absence will force a reconfiguration of the team’s offensive hierarchy. Furthermore, they’ll lose their most reliable and well-respected advocate. His durability has, unfortunately, almost completely defined his young career. Now, this disappointment presents a hurdle as he aims to solidify his position in the squad.
With Murray injured, the Kings have to find a new solution for their starting power forward spot. Among the candidates are Keon Ellis and Nique Clifford, either of whom would be a considerable upgrade in Murray’s absence. The new coaching staff will need to be judicious in their choices. This is very important for keeping on top of their game through this critical period of the season.
