To those who follow the NBA, Khris Middleton needs no introduction. He has formally decided to use his $33.3 million option for the 2023 season. His decision is groundbreaking now as he starts his 14th season in the league. He’s taken an amazing path, going from G League player to three-time All-Star and NBA Champion with the Milwaukee Bucks. Middleton was dealt to the Washington Wizards during last year’s trade deadline. He definitely wants to continue the legacy that he’s left, but kind of transition to this new group.
Middleton’s career has, of course, been inextricably tied to that of Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. Their remarkable on-court chemistry, which has been widely lauded, has been a main factor in the success of the Bucks in recent seasons. Yet, Middleton’s journey has not been without its obstacles. Injuries have really hurt him, especially these last few years—not just affecting his performance but his availability. Last year, he was still trying to come back from offseason surgery on both ankles that kept him to only 37 games.
Still, in his few appearances, Middleton was able to keep stellar stats for the amount of time he played. His recording true shooting percentage was 58.8%, good for the 3rd-highest mark of his career. On top of that, he produced 18.9 points and 6.4 assists per 36 minutes while on the floor. These numbers are a testament to his ability to be an invaluable asset when healthy.
From the 2017-18 season through 2021-22, Middleton consistently averaged over 20 points per game over four seasons, showcasing his scoring ability and importance to his team’s offensive strategy. As he transitions into a new chapter with the Wizards, there is optimism regarding his potential to thrive alongside younger teammates while bringing his veteran experience.
Milwaukee had a bigger plan and traded Middleton to the Wizards. Their ultimate goal was to become younger at the forward position. This change is indicative of a really great, optimistic positive trend for both Middleton and the Wizards. They are hungry to improve their roster and increase their competitiveness in the league.
