Khalil Shakir, a 25-year-old WR for the Buffalo Bills, injured his right ankle on August 3, 2025 with a high ankle sprain. He was subsequently diagnosed as “week-to-week” to recover from the injury. This injury has to be a major worry for the Bills. Shakir was an important cog in their offense last year, leading the team in receiving yards, receiving catches, and targets last season. Alaina Getzenberg, who covers the Buffalo Bills for ESPN, was first to report on the injury that happened during Friday night’s practice.
Shakir had to leave the field early with the assistance of athletic trainers after suffering the injury. His absence will be felt not only in practice but potentially in upcoming games, as he will miss Sunday’s practice session. How much of a recovery timeline is yet to be seen, but going from “day-to-day” to “week-to-week” means he is likely out longer.
It was last season that Shakir really established himself as quarterback Josh Allen’s go-to option. He repeatedly proved to everyone his ability to make monumental contributions to the cause. His work was so impressive that he was rewarded this past offseason with a four-year contract extension. This decision further emphasizes the organization’s commitment to his development and talent.
Beyond Shakir’s injury, the Bills have had other health issues to contend with. With Cole Bishop out for Sunday’s practice, due to a quad injury. At the same time, Taylor Rapp has appeared on the injury report with a knee injury. Injuries like these may come to affect their early preparations as they look to get ready for their next opponent.
The Bills will need to adjust their strategies in light of these injuries, particularly with Shakir’s absence affecting their offensive dynamics. Though the team has an uphill battle ahead of them, they remain undeterred. They do expect that Shakir, along with their other injured players, will recover quickly.
