Kevin Patullo, the new Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator. He is making headlines for other reasons — catching a lot of notice for his unique contributions to the team’s offense. Early in his coaching career, he figured out how important adaptability was. This lesson has deeply informed his practice over the course of his career.
Rod Patullo’s coaching career rocketed to the national radar when he was with the Indianapolis Colts from 2018-2020. He started as the receivers coach and soon took on the title of pass game specialist under head coach Nick Sirianni. He proved himself an innovative and adaptive thinker at a crucial 2008 inflection point. At the time, he was an assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs under offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.
In that season, the team faced unexpected challenges, prompting Gailey to declare, “All right, we got to figure out a new offense for this week.” This was Patullo’s defining moment. It dawned on him that he was ready to go all in, do the work and try everything necessary to succeed. So we eventually came about creating this no huddle system. We were in the pistol, and in 2008, no one really knew what the pistol was at the NFL level.
Patullo’s experience in the pistol offense was an interesting aspect to follow as he made the transition into the NFL. His creative approach to otherwise insurmountable problems has served all Philadelphians fantastically well. He’s the primary architect of the team’s game plan on a week-to-week basis. Recently, quarterback Kenny Pickett called him the team’s “unsung hero” ahead of Super Bowl week. His behind-the-scenes work has certainly not gone unnoticed!
So when Sirianni was hired as the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021, he immediately brought Patullo with him to serve as his right-hand man. This partnership was instrumental in deepening their collaborative work. In his own remarks, Sirianni emphasized Patullo’s key role. He continued, I’ve never made a decision in the building without Kevin Patullo. It helped them do that by having a strong partnership that instead let them create a unified offensive vision.
As the Eagles’ new offensive coordinator, Patullo works with that upstart quarterback Jalen Hurts. Hurts has credited Patullo for being a steadying force from the beginning of his process with the Eagles. Hurts remarked, “Coach Patullo has been here throughout the journey as well.” This continuity has been absolutely key for Hurts, who is in the midst of a sixth different playcaller in six NFL seasons.
Here’s the Eagles’ newest addition Patullo sharing some experience and knowledge to the Eagles’ offense. He knows that success is predicated on the idea of working together with Sirianni. He stated, “I think there’s a lot of fundamental things that we see the same way, but I do think our brains work differently.” He appreciates their ongoing dialogue: “It’s a good back and forth conversational piece that we have constantly. There’s a lot of things he believes in that I believe in as well and we’re going to do those things.”
As Patullo settles into his role, he continues to challenge himself and his colleagues to explore new ideas and strategies. His willingness to embrace change and innovation is apparent in his approach to playcalling and game planning. That’s why the Eagles are set up for sustained success moving forward with Patullo at the helm of the Eagles offensive explosion.
