Jaydn Denly was the star for Kent on a rain-affected day at the Spitfire Ground, Canterbury. His all-round display was instrumental in giving the team an early 224-run lead against Lancashire. Denly was back in first ball of the day at 96-0 and began with a flourish, cutting and pulling his way to 55 before departing. By the end of play, he’d boosted his score to 74, allowing Kent to close on 206-5 to give themselves a lead of 215 runs.
It had all started so well with Denly and his partner in crime, Ben Dawkins, seeming intent on building on Kent’s early lead. However, Denly couldn’t have had a worse start, as he was waved in caught behind for a mere 19 runs. Though this was admittedly a blow, he refocused almost immediately and doubled down on getting runs. With the rain breaking play, he demonstrated his mental toughness by advancing his score past the 19 mark.
Stanley was simply too good for Lancashire’s bowlers, using his skill against Denly and co to superbly manage the chase. First day back, and he finished with ripping figures of 2-55. Tom Bailey did eventually get Denly out, bowled to leave the off stump cartwheeling back. This harsh moment rounded off a pulsating innings that proved to be pivotal to Kent’s triumph despite the early woe.
Denly’s fine return has put Kent in a very strong position against Lancashire. They now lead by 215 runs and they are assured of at least four points from this match.
