Kenny Pickett Set to Start Against Eagles Following Geno Smith’s Injury

Geno Smith will likely miss the upcoming game against the Philadelphia Eagles after suffering injuries during the Raiders’ 24-17 loss to the Denver Broncos. Smith injured his right shoulder and cut his right hand in the third quarter. He immediately exited the game and went straight to the locker room, receiving treatment.

As a result of these injuries, Smith was unable to practice, leading to concerns about his availability for this Sunday’s matchup against the Tennessee Titans. Head coach Pete Carroll said that Smith’s diagnosis was “day to day.” He is optimistic for a speedy recovery. However, it’s still unclear if Smith will be back in time to play.

With Smith absent, Kenny Pickett would likely assume starting quarterback duties full-time. For the record, Pickett was selected in the first round by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022. After two productive seasons in Pittsburgh, he was traded to the Eagles in March 2024. Pickett has a stellar 15-10 starter record. His experience and skill are a great addition to the team and we’re all lucky to have him.

During last year’s slate, Pickett shined at the event, completing 8 of 11 passes. He completed 7 of his 9 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown. All of that has prepared him for this new challenge. The moment that most indicated he was ready came during the fourth quarter of the N.C.

Third-stringer Aidan O’Connell is now a member of the team’s emergency QB tier. Now, he’ll be thrust into the backup role behind Pickett as the Steelers host the Philadelphia Eagles.

Smith of course inspired the Eagles’ unlikely upset victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17 last season. He was an efficient 10/15 passing for 143 yards and a touchdown. His leadership and experience have proven invaluable for the team, so losing him – as their current record indicates – would be a crushing blow.

“As a competitor, [Smith] wants to get back out there as soon as he possibly can. And he will.” – Pete Carroll
