Kelly Oubre Jr. Returns to Sixers on $8.4 Million Option

The 29-year-old All-Star point guard officially made his $8.4 million player option for the 2019-20 campaign last week. This decision comes after two successful campaigns with the team, where he showcased his talent and potential on the court.

Oubre is coming off of a career season in 2023-24 and played a big role in the Sixers’ surprising success. Through the 2024-25 campaign, he didn’t let up. He scored 15.1 points per game while shooting a scintillating 47% overall. His performance not only endeared him to his teammates, secured his position among the team’s core, but showcased how far he’d come as a player.

Throughout his career, Oubre has played for multiple teams, including the Charlotte Hornets, Washington Wizards, Phoenix Suns, and Golden State Warriors. He went on to be drafted 15th overall in 2015. Since then, he’s flourished in various basketball climates, sharpening each tool of his trade with each organization he’s hooped for.

This past 2024-25 campaign, Oubre was inserted into the starting lineup in 57 of the 60 games he participated in. His season was cut short after he suffered a right knee sprain that forced him to miss the final month of the season. Even with this misfire, Oubre’s season was still worthy of praise and he has clearly established himself as a guy who can play an important role for the Sixers.

Oubre’s willingness to come back to Philadelphia should be seen as a positive sign of his investment in the franchise and their goals for the season ahead. The Sixers will look to capitalize on his scoring ability and experience as they aim for greater success in the league.
