Kellen Moore Takes Charge in New Orleans as Tyler Shough Begins His Journey

…And just like that, Kellen Moore is the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. He’s a brilliant mind with the experience of running one of the country’s top offenses in multiple stops as an offensive coordinator. Moore is well known for his ability to strategically pivot. During his six-year career, across three NFL teams, he has developed a reputation for changing his offensive approach to take advantage of his quarterbacks and their supporting players’ strengths. He’s preparing Shough to be their rookie head coach’s day-one starter. All eyes will be on how Moore’s creative tactics help transform the Saints’ offense.

During his four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, Moore worked intimately with quarterback Dak Prescott. This union gave him the freedom to showcase intricate offensive designs that changed with the team’s lineup shakeups. His strategies put the signal caller more and more with his feet behind center, a sea change move that was discovered more each year. Moore seriously mismanaged the last 3/4 of the season Moore was in charge Texans game plan Well, he had Read winning scheme.

After his successful run in Dallas, Moore pursued a fresh challenge in 2022 as the offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers. He’s had success in the past pairing with a young quarterback who can make big plays and get the ball out quickly like Justin Herbert. In Los Angeles, Moore moved more to the shotgun alignment that had defined much of his tenure in Dallas. Instead, he zeroed in on maximizing the value of the shotgun formation and created plays that catered to Herbert’s strengths. His time with the Chargers saw a notable reliance on pre-snap motion, which added complexity to their offensive schemes and kept defenses guessing.

Moore spent a season with the Philadelphia Eagles. As the offensive coordinator at Alabama, he refined his expertise in coaching quarterbacks, helping to unlock Jalen Hurts’ vast potential. During his time in Philadelphia, he morphed the offense into a ground-and-pound attack. This strategy took full advantage of the talents of Hurts and the Eagles’ stable of dynamic running backs. This year illustrated Moore’s ability to adjust his offensive philosophy to the players available to him. It helped solidify his reputation as a wildly innovative play caller.

In addition to Moore, the Saints got run game coordinator T.J. Paganetti from the Eagles. This step highlights just how much Staley is looking to combine concepts from his various past coaching stops. Our rural-urban partnership is very important. Over time, they’ll find a balance that works that plays to Shough’s strengths—after all, he’s a rookie himself coming to the league.

Just as telling is the evolution of Moore’s offenses through the years, showing his not just awareness of but ability to manipulate football dynamics and player capabilities. He turned heads in 2021 after storming Dallas with a historic rate of empty sets. This creative strategy took entire new levels of offensive line formations. During his time coaching in Philadelphia, he focused on a run-heavy approach in 2024. This change was a testament to his adaptability and willingness to adjust his offensive philosophy to fit the team’s necessary direction.

Now that Shough is under center for the Saints, Moore has a different set of challenges and opportunities ahead of him. The rookie under center has looked the part as a collegiate QB, but the NFL offers a different beast. Moore arrives with experience working with established quarterbacks as well as up-and-coming talent. This background will be important as he works to build Shough’s talent and confidence in his skillset.

Moore’s coaching philosophy emphasizes versatility. Throughout his career he has succeeded in zone-heavy offenses and gap-heavy offenses alike. Unlike many of his coaching peers, he adjusts his playbook to fit the strengths of his roster. That versatility will be key in designing offensive blueprints that bring out the best in Shough. He needs to be aware of both the Saints’ talent level among their pass catchers and the offensive line.

With a fresh new season upon us, the Saints in many ways have an offense at a crossroads. Kellen Moore is calling the shots, and Tyler Shough, pictured in top, is taking over a key position. We are thrilled by the potential ahead of us! The effectiveness of this partnership relies heavily on their ability to communicate. In the process, they need to change, breach and evolve as they meet the monumental challenges presented by the NFL environment.
