Keaton Jennings did not disappoint during the T20 Blast opener, stunning the crowd with an explosive 95 runs from just 49 balls. The 15-year-old’s astounding display inspired Lancashire to a comfortable 47-run win against Nottinghamshire. The game played out in heartbreaking fashion at Emirates Old Trafford. There, Jennings strung together quite the highlight reel and established himself as one of the most important players on his squad.
Jennings’ knock was his second highest T20 score, and was a truly explosive innings that contained eight fours and six sixes. His aggressive approach at the plate got everybody fired up. Partnering with fellow batsman Wells, they put on a record partnership of 177 runs off only 15.4 overs. This formidable partnership catapulted Lancashire to a commanding score of 432. It established the mark for the most T20 runs scored in the club’s history for any wicket.
The duo’s stunning performance sent Nottinghamshire out of the title race. The task set them by Lancashire became an ever steeper hill to climb. Jennings’ brutal batting and intelligent shot selection left bowlers on the back foot. This performance underlined the strength in depth of the talent in the Lancashire squad.
Though Jennings’ eventual dismissal – which arrived shortly after the marriage with Wells – was soon to come, Lancashire kept a firm grip on the game. The loss of Jennings and Kasey Aldridge’s wicket brought the victory margin down to a much thinner margin. It was still a substantial mitigation of the damage they did to their innings overall.
Defending champions Nottinghamshire were beaten by Lancashire’s third highest score ever. Nottinghamshire were unable to produce the type of muscular batting their opponents had displayed. Lancashire went on to win a nail-biting match by 47 runs. Jennings’s contribution was vital though, his explosive style with the bat at the top of the order key.
