Kawhi Leonard, recently a two-time NBA Finals MVP, is making his return with the Los Angeles Clippers this Sunday. As for his return, we’ll have to see him get through his pregame routine against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Leonard has faced a series of injury challenges since joining the Clippers in 2019, including a significant absence last season and ongoing knee issues.
Leonard was dealt a major blow on November 3. In December 2022, he sprained his right ankle and foot after landing on another player’s foot during a game against the Miami Heat. Since that date, he’s missed ten straight games. It’s been an unfortunate run for a player who’s battled injuries in previous seasons as well. He sat out the entire 2021-22 season to rehabilitate a serious right knee injury. Despite a surgical procedure since, this injury has continued to develop to limit him even now.
This year, Leonard has only played in six games, averaging 24.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. His unique scoring ability continues to make him a crucial part of the Clippers plans, making his possible return all the more important.
After a positive development on Wednesday, Leonard took an important step forward returning to on‐court action as part of Mercy Corps’ project in Orlando. In this training, he centered non-contact work. Clippers head coach Ty Lue sounded hopeful about Leonard’s condition after that practice, saying that he was doing well. With that said, this breakthrough creates optimism that Leonard will be back with his teammates on the court sooner rather than later.
Like the rest of this season has gone, the Clippers now find themselves in a double edged sword scenario. Leonard’s return would obviously increase their odds significantly as they continue their fight to earn a playoff berth. His return would not only enhance the team’s offensive capabilities but provide veteran leadership during critical moments in games.
