Deon Bush, a nine-year veteran safety for the Kansas City Chiefs, suffered a significant injury during the team’s preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals on August 10, 2025. Bush is expected to miss the rest of the campaign, having torn his left Achilles tendon. Injuries like this one are such that any hopes he had of making the Chiefs’ final 53-man roster are likely dashed.
As soon as the game started, things got bad, as the Chiefs lost 20-17 in a crushing, terrible loss. Bush’s noncontact injury occurred when the Michigan standout was attempting to cut and burst upfield. He went down on the turf and had to be quickly carried off by the field’s medical team. After Bush was carted off the field, he tucked his head under a towel and wept for his lost season.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes sat with Bush to comfort him before he left the field. Running backs coach Reid saluted Bush’s solid work before the injury, adding, “Deon was having a good camp, too. This last comment is an interesting indication of his recent steps forward. It further highlights the stakes for him as he attempts to make a big impact in a crowded WR room this season.
Bush came into the 2025 season with a lot of momentum after an impressive training camp. He had done a lot of damage in the earlier games. Most impressively, he picked off a pass in the second half of the 2023 AFC Championship Game versus the Baltimore Ravens. His presence and skillset were expected to be monumental for the Chiefs’ defensive game plan.
Losing Bush will certainly leave a big dent in the Chiefs’ defensive corp as they move into the regular season quickly approaching. With his tremendous experience and proven track record to draw from, he will be missed greatly both on and off the field. The coaching staff will have to figure out how to replace him and keep the defense among the best in the nation.
