Kadarius Toney, a 26-year-old NFL player known for his key role in the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVII victory, faces legal trouble after being arrested in Georgia. Authorities booked Toney in a Douglas County facility on February 6 on charges of aggravated assault—strangulation and obstructing or harassing 911 calls. The charges stem from an incident where Toney allegedly prevented a woman from contacting authorities by taking her phone and reportedly strangled her. A judge set his bail at $25,000 per count, though records indicate Toney was not in custody as of February 7.
Toney's arrest comes after a tumultuous period in his professional career. A first-round pick by the New York Giants in 2021, Toney was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs midway through the 2022 season. Despite being inactive for all four playoff games that year, the Chiefs had high hopes for him to emerge as their No. 1 wide receiver in 2023. His performance in Super Bowl LVII, where he executed a pivotal punt return in the fourth quarter, was instrumental in securing the Chiefs' 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Before joining the Chiefs, Toney appeared in three games for the Cleveland Browns last season. The Browns released him in December after he incurred a taunting penalty and mishandled a punt during a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. His brief stint with the Browns highlighted issues that culminated in his release from the team.
The recent allegations against Toney are serious. According to TMZ Sports, on January 14, Toney allegedly placed his hand around a woman's throat and applied pressure sufficient to impede her breathing. The legal proceedings will determine his fate as he navigates these severe accusations.
