Justin Thomas Urges Fellow Golfers to Embrace Media Engagement

Justin Thomas, a prominent figure in professional golf, has issued a call to action for his fellow PGA Tour golfers. In a memo addressed to the tour's players and published by The Athletic on Tuesday, Thomas emphasized the need for golfers to enhance their media accessibility. As a two-time major winner and a member of the PGA Tour's 16-player advisory council, Thomas has a vested interest in the sport's growth and popularity. His message focuses on the importance of connecting with fans, particularly younger audiences, by showcasing more of their "on-course personality."

Thomas's memo highlighted research showing that the "on-course personality" of golfers is a significant driver of interest among young fans aged 18 to 34. Acknowledging that stepping outside comfort zones can be challenging, he encouraged his peers to consider participating in activities such as pre-round interviews, mid-round interviews, wearing a mic, and communicating equipment or swing changes during telecasts. He believes these efforts will strengthen relationships with media partners like NBC, CBS, and ESPN, ultimately benefiting both the players and the sport.

"I know stepping outside of our comfort zones isn't always easy," he stated.

Thomas candidly shared his initial reluctance towards such initiatives, admitting that he had often been quick to decline requests for mid-round interviews or suggestions for trying new things. However, he now recognizes the value these interactions bring to fans.

"Believe me, in the past I've been the first to say 'no' before things are even done being asked," Thomas confessed.

"I've had no interest when someone asks for an interview mid-round or suggests trying something new," he added.

Despite these reservations, Thomas has come to see how much fans cherish moments that offer insight into players' thought processes, interactions with caddies, and reactions to their performances.

"But I also know how much the fans love those moments — hearing our thought processes, conversations with our caddies, our reactions to the shots, and understanding the ups and downs of competing at the highest level," he explained.

Thomas's proposal is not about changing players' personalities or routines. Instead, he advocates for an open-minded approach to adapting and experimenting with new strategies to engage audiences. His goal is to make golf more appealing and accessible, thereby expanding its fan base.

"While we may (at least I know I do) think it's not that important or interesting, our fans do," he remarked.
