Justin Hastings of the Cayman Islands has secured a remarkable victory at the Latin American Amateur Championship, earning a coveted spot in the Masters and two other major tournaments. Hastings, showcasing an impressive performance, built a four-shot lead with an 8-under 64 during the final rounds. The tournament's schedule was adjusted to accommodate an impending bad weather forecast, with the final round played immediately after the third round concluded. Despite an hour delay due to storms, Hastings held his ground to win the championship by a mere stroke.
Patrick Sparks of Peru emerged as the runner-up in this fiercely contested championship. For his efforts, Sparks has been granted exemption into the final qualifying stage for both the U.S. Open and British Open this year. Hastings' victory marks a significant achievement for the Cayman Islands, making him the second player in the last four years from his nation to win this prestigious tournament, following Aaron Jarvis.
Hastings has been an avid participant in the Latin American Amateur since a young age, making the cut at just 14 years old. His experience playing at Royal Portrush during a British Boys event has undoubtedly contributed to his skill set. Despite Sparks' efforts, which saw him cut the four-shot deficit in half after three holes, Hastings managed to extend his lead. The turning point came when Sparks took a bogey on the par-5 10th hole while Hastings secured a birdie, widening the gap.
The competition remained fierce with a two-shot swing on the 13th hole; Hastings made a bogey while Sparks succeeded with a birdie. Nevertheless, Hastings concluded with a par, clinching victory by one stroke. Hastings expressed his excitement and anticipation for playing at Augusta National, fulfilling a lifelong dream.
"I grew up a huge Masters nut. Every Thursday when the Masters was on, I'd be sick from school to watch the first day," said Hastings.
Reflecting on his achievement and entry into the Masters field, he shared:
"Just to be sitting here in this position and think that I'm going to be in that field is something I don't think has quite hit me."
"But man, am I excited for it."
Hastings also highlighted the significance of his victory for Cayman Islands golf:
"To have two champions from the Cayman Islands — we have 27 holes down there, limited, super competitive golf."
