Hopefully he’s right ’cause it’s time for Justin Fields, the 26-year-old new Jets QB, to show what he can do. He’s preparing for his highly-anticipated debut on September 7th against the Pittsburgh Steelers. After a rocky beginning to his professional life, Fields developed an open belief in himself. He thinks he’s going to have a breakout season just like he is due for one! He aims to demonstrate his potential as a leader on the field and to solidify his role as the undisputed starter for the Jets.
Fields started his professional career in 2021 as a first-round selection for the Chicago Bears. Even after being dealt those bad cards and being traded to the Jets just last year, he’s battled back and fought through the adversity. Fields has impressed his new coaches and teammates with his understated leadership approach. This remarkable quality has reared its head more prominently during practice sessions. His previous stints in the NFL, including being benched in favor of Russell Wilson when he joined the Steelers, have only fueled his drive to succeed.
In his final dozen outings, Fields has taken leaps and bounds. He has an eye-popping 8-4 record, accounting for 17 combined passing/rushing touchdowns while keeping his turnover count to just seven. This performance hasn’t escaped the attention of his new offensive coordinator, Tanner Engstrand, who believes there’s yet more to Fields’ game.
“That’s pretty good. We can do some things with that,” – Tanner Engstrand
In March, Fields inked a two-year, $40 million deal with the Jets. This deal further illustrates the team’s desire to keep him as one of the core pieces of their future. As he starts his process, now with his fourth offensive coordinator in as many years, Fields is aware of what lies ahead. Through all this, he remains positive about the talent that surrounds him.
“Our offense and defense are new, so guys are really tuned in and locked in and trying to get everything down,” Fields stated. He knows that collaboration and work ethic are going to be the real keys for them to reach their full potential.
“But I think once we do, I think the sky’s the limit. I mean, we have all the guys we need, we have all the talent, so it’s really just going to come down to discipline and execution,” – Justin Fields
Engstrand stressed Fields’ razor-like intellect. He lauded his preparedness to take on the challenges of the new season.
“Everybody talks about the running — well, the guy’s got an arm, too, and he does a great job with that,” – Tanner Engstrand
As the season nears, Justin Fields is trying to get the most out of his potential and help the Jets make a run to the playoffs. He has a clean slate with the Knicks. With an exciting, young, and forward-thinking team around him, he’s poised to make a big impact in the league right away.
“Mentally, he’s phenomenal. He’s been absolutely phenomenal so far, and we expect more out of that. There’s just a lot of things that you can do with that type of player that’s going to put stress on a defense and make that defensive coordinator stay up late at night as we get going into this thing,” – Tanner Engstrand
As the season approaches, Justin Fields remains focused on harnessing his potential and leading the Jets toward success. With a fresh start in New York and a supportive team around him, he is ready to make his mark in the league.
