Jose Mourinho, the renowned football manager, has addressed the racism allegation made against him by Galatasaray following the heated Istanbul derby with his Fenerbahce side. Speaking exclusively to Sky Sports News, Mourinho expressed his calmness and relaxation throughout the controversy, attributing this to his belief that the allegation backfired. He suggested that the accusation stemmed from some Galatasaray fans' lack of knowledge about his extensive connections with Africa, African people, and African players.
"Everyone knows who I am as a person. Everybody knows my bad qualities, but that is not one of my bad qualities. Exactly the opposite!" – Jose Mourinho
The allegations sparked outrage among some Galatasaray supporters, who took to the streets to burn shirts of former player Didier Drogba. Mourinho highlighted his connections with African charities and emphasized his understanding of the cultural contexts involved. The Turkish Football Federation has been contacted for comment on the matter but has yet to respond.
Mourinho's domestic ban was initially set at four matches but was swiftly reduced to two, which he attributes to the incorrectness of the allegations. He noted that this rapid reduction was a clear indication of the falsity of the accusations against him.
"On the day my [four-match] ban was decided it comes to public eyes that the chief of the disciplinary committee is celebrating among friends with a Galatasaray shirt on," – Jose Mourinho
In addition to addressing the controversy, Mourinho reflected on his positive relationship with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, describing him as a good person and a great businessman. Despite not being close friends, Mourinho acknowledged Ratcliffe's hospitality and support.
"I know Sir Jim Ratcliffe. I'm not saying we are big friends but we have a good relationship. I know him well. He invited me to his house a couple of times. I see him as a good person and a great businessman." – Jose Mourinho
Mourinho also shared that he has not spoken to Ruben Amorim since taking over at Manchester United, apart from exchanging Christmas greetings. As he looks ahead to Fenerbahce's path in the Europa League, Mourinho remarked on the potential for a "revenge tour" should his team progress from the last 16.
"Probably even from people who don't like me the support was there," – Jose Mourinho
Mourinho expressed gratitude for the unwavering support he has received from both acquaintances and strangers alike during this tumultuous period. Esteemed former players such as Didier Drogba and Michael Essien have also stood by him.
