Jordi Fernandez, the 42-year-old coach from Badalona, Spain, has decided not to extend his contract with Canada Basketball. Fernandez, currently in his first season with the Brooklyn Nets, announced his resignation as the head coach of Canada's senior men's national basketball team. The decision was disclosed by Canada Basketball on Thursday, citing Fernandez's desire to concentrate on his family and NBA duties as pivotal reasons for this move.
Fernandez's tenure with Team Canada marked significant achievements. In 2023, he took over as head coach from Nick Nurse, leading the team to qualify for the Olympics for the first time in 24 years. Under his leadership, Canada also secured a bronze medal in the 2023 FIBA World Cup, marking their first-ever medal in the event. These accomplishments have set a high bar for his successor.
Canada Basketball will now embark on the search for a new head coach who will prepare the team for future international competitions, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The new appointee will be tasked with building on the foundation laid by Fernandez and steering the team towards continued success. Despite Fernandez's departure, Team Canada remains optimistic about their prospects in upcoming tournaments.
Fernandez's focus now shifts entirely to his responsibilities with the Brooklyn Nets, where he is navigating his inaugural season. His commitment to both his family and professional obligations was a significant factor in his decision to step down from his role with Team Canada.
