Jordan Love Returns to Practice After Thumb Surgery

Jordan Love Returns to Practice After Thumb Surgery

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love has returned to action on the NFL field. He had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb earlier this year. The procedure took place on August 12. This was only days after he had hurt himself in the first live action of the year in a preseason tilt against the New York Jets on August 9. His timely return is a huge part of the Packers’ preparations. They will all be together as the Titans prepare for their regular-season opener against the Detroit Lions on September 9.

Love got back in practice on Monday, just six days after the surgery. Initially, he had his left thumb wrapped and utilized a plastic bag covering his entire non-throwing hand due to rain conditions. Despite these obstacles, he participated fully in practice activities, excluding 11-on-11 drills, which were modified to ensure his thumb remained protected.

With two practices to prepare, Love showed flashes of what made him a second-round pick, going 16-of-24 passing with two touchdowns. He walked into the possibility of two interceptions and still produced on a ridiculous level. He rifled in a perfectly placed 21-yard touchdown pass to rookie receiver Matthew Golden. This performance is an example of how quickly Love can bounce back from injury and bring his competitive edge, too.

Trying to avoid surgery, Love attempted to practice only two days after his injury. He soon came to the conclusion that surgery was necessary to make his recovery a success. Coach Matt LaFleur responded to Love’s situation by incorporating additional 7-on-7 drills into practice, a departure from the team’s usual routine, to facilitate Love’s participation without further risking his thumb.

The Packers are focusing on fine-tuning their training plan during the week. They’ve got a couple more public camp practices scheduled, including what ought to be an exciting joint practice with the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday. These practices will provide Love and the team with a chance to further cement their new strategies before entering the competitive fire of the 2023-24 season.
