Jonny Bairstow to Lead Yorkshire as Red-Ball Captain in Division One Return

Yorkshire’s red-ball side has a new captain—homegrown wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow. As the squad is led back into Division One of the County Championship, he leads with authority and confidence. Scheduled to captain Yorkshire on April 4 against Hampshire, this will be Yorkshire’s first Division One game since 2022. Bairstow, who has a remarkable record with 100 Test matches under his belt, follows in the footsteps of his late father, David, who captained Yorkshire.

It’s not the first time Bairstow has walked a path, seeing as he did captain Yorkshire between 1984 and 1986. His huge, commercial success is something that he’s rightly proud of. Armed with the practical knowledge learned over his four decades in the field, he throws himself into the position. Bairstow has captained Welsh Fire in The Hundred before and is excited to bring his leadership skills home to Yorkshire.

“It’s a huge honour to become Yorkshire captain.” – Jonny Bairstow

How Bairstow leads them will be important, with a promotion push on their agenda in Division One. 12 Test centuries His experience, that coming-of-age and defining moment beginning when he made his first-class debut for Yorkshire back in 2009. On top of that, his accolades as a World Cup winning coach in both 20-over and 50-over formats only enhance his experienced resume.

England batsman Dawid Malan will step up as captain for the T20 Blast campaign. Accordingly, this leadership transition will occur as the tournament begins in earnest in late May. Bairstow’s recent absence from Test cricket since March 2024 and his last T20 international appearance during last summer’s T20 World Cup are noteworthy, but his commitment to Yorkshire remains steadfast.

“There are not many father-and-sons have done that previously. That’s an exciting part to it, but a side bit to everything that happens on the field.” – Jonny Bairstow

With Bairstow established as Yorkshire’s first-choice wicketkeeper this summer, his continued absence from the Test team would seem to increase his status as an integral part of the side. We believe his leadership will galvanize the squad as they begin this exciting and difficult journey into Division One.
