Jonathan Kuminga has officially secured a starting position with the Golden State Warriors, following an impressive performance in his first five games of the season. The young winger’s fifth full year has taken his game to another level. Through his command of the game, he is establishing himself as a true weapon for their squad.
Kuminga’s impact on the court is evident, his scoring at a 16.2 ppm clip, on efficient 53.7% shooting. In addition to this, he’s become reliable from deep, knocking down 7 of his 16 three-point attempts. Effective range indicator slugs his offensive development. In addition to displaying his scoring judgement, Davis is dominant on the boards. He has grabbed 37 rebounds in his last five games, a high for him over any such stretch.
The Warriors have put Kuminga in a terrific position to succeed. On opponent’s top perimeter scorer at the start of the game, he’ll guard him. This responsibility further emphasizes the level of trust that head coach Steve Kerr has shown in him. Kerr praised Kuminga’s just all-around game. Incredible foot speed and the way he’s rebounding and attacking the rim, those things make him special.”
Kuminga’s evolution into a reliable starting-caliber player arrives after he previously aired his issues with his lack of opportunities in previous years. On the court, he wanted more minutes so he could make a bigger impact on the court. Now, due to an equally unfortunate injury to his Warriors’ teammate Moses Moody documented during training camp, he’s getting that opportunity. With Moody again sidelined, Kuminga has taken full advantage of the opportunity presented to him.
With innovative playcalling of course, his improved passing ability has been the essential aspect that has made him so successful. Still, Kuminga plays with a clear sense of purpose on the court. He does a great job of getting to the rim and distributing the ball to teammates like Jimmy and Steph. Kerr highlighted this change in Kuminga’s approach, noting that there has been “hardly any of the mid-shot clock, 17-foot pullups” from him recently, indicating a more focused style of play.
According to reports, the Warriors rejected sign-and-trade offers from the Sacramento Kings and the Phoenix Suns for Kuminga. This move is an obvious indication that they plan to maintain him on their roster. The dynamic between Kuminga and veteran players like Jimmy and Draymond Green has been notably effective, contributing to the team’s overall performance.
As the season progresses, it is clear that Jonathan Kuminga’s hard work and determination have paid off, solidifying his role as a key player on the Warriors’ roster.
