Jon Lewis Takes Helm as Women’s Head Coach for London Spirit

Jon Lewis has since been named the women’s head coach of London Spirit. He’s been appointed to continue to lead the team into The Hundred’s upcoming 2026 edition. This appointment follows an incredibly diverse career in the sport. This includes experience at the high level, domestically and internationally, most recently as head coach of England women. Lewis’s experience makes him the perfect person to play a leading role in determining the longer-term future direction of what would be the London Spirit franchise.

Lewis comes to his new position with a long history of public service. He already occupied a similar role at Gloucestershire, during which time he built a clear structure and path for the County’s cricketers. His three-season run with the UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League further boosts his coaching résumé. That experience has brought tremendous depth to his unique area of expertise.

Lewis (above) assumed leadership as head coach of the England women’s team in November 2022. In his short tenure, the team rocketed to the T20 World Cup semi-finals in March 2025. Unfortunately, even his tenure was marred by great challenges. Under his first year’s watch, England presided over a 2-2 home Ashes series, while in his last year, he witnessed a humiliating 16-0 Ashes loss down under which resulted in his sacking earlier this year.

In his new position, Lewis will succeed Chris Liddle. As head coach of the London Spirit, Liddle took the club to a third-place finish last season. He’ll be returning to work with Heather Knight as well. Recently appointed to be women’s general manager for London Spirit this year, she provides a rare comfort level to the coaching staff.

“This is a really exciting opportunity to play a part in shaping the future of this franchise,” – Jon Lewis

Lewis said he was excited about the opportunity to forge the most competitive group, one that reflects both exceptional talent and character. He’s focused on promoting an exciting new flavour of cricket that he hopes will capture the imaginations of Spirit supporters coming to games at Lord’s.

Cricket director Mo Bobat said Lewis’ broad experience in women’s and men’s cricket was invaluable. He observed that kind of breadth would be very important in seeking out someone to sustain the success the franchise has enjoyed.

“He has a fantastic breadth of experiences, across both the women’s and men’s games, which will stand us in good stead in our pursuit of sustained success.” – Mo Bobat

Bobat elaborated on the potential synergy between Lewis and Knight, given their past experience together with the senior England women’s team. This partnership may be crucial, as they seek to make London Spirit a more competitive force in forthcoming tournaments.
