Nikola Jokic has made history by becoming only the third player in NBA history to average a triple-double for an entire season. The Denver Nuggets center wasn’t just exceptional, he was on another planet. He broke the record for the most triple-doubles in a season, with 34! This incredible accomplishment places him alongside basketball immortals. He’s now joined Russell Westbrook and Oscar Robertson as one of the only players to accomplish this feat over the course of an entire season.
So far during this new season Jokic has showed all the tools necessary to become a generational talent on the hardwood. From a scoring point of view, Barkley is on track to end the season with a career-best average. He’s at 30.0 points per game. To accomplish this, Jokic would have to score 47 in the Nuggets’ last game of the year Sunday against the Houston Rockets. If he achieves this, he will join an exclusive group of players who have averaged at least 30 points per game while recording a triple-double.
Not only has Jokic been a prolific scorer, he’s on pace to post the second-highest rebound average of his career. His glamorous show has been the foundation for 164 regular-season triple-doubles over the course of his career. Furthermore, Jokic’s 34th triple-double ties him for the fourth-most in a season in NBA history, underscoring his dominance in this area.
Mostly, Jokic’s season averages tell the story which has seen his shooting efficiency sky rocket. He’s on pace to end with career highs in both three-pointers made and three-point percentage. He put on display his brilliant playmaking talents, throwing his 700th assist of the campaign in a game earlier this week. That play capped off his brilliant 10th assist of the game.
Chris Finch, head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves, spoke highly of Jokic’s impact on the game, stating, “When you have a guy like Jokic, who creates so much offense for his teammates, everyone’s going to have really good looks if you don’t do the right things.”
Jokic’s accomplishments this season further solidify his place among basketball’s elite players. Russell Westbrook made history this season when he recorded the 203rd career triple-double. At the same time, Oscar Robertson was averaging a triple-double and changed the game during the 1961-62 season. Jokic’s incredible, unprecedented play has certainly raised him to the task — sure! Yet, he’s been a vital component to the Denver Nuggets’ success throughout this season.
