Nikola Jokic and Russell Westbrook made NBA history on Friday night, becoming the first pair of teammates to record a triple-double in the same game twice in a single season. The remarkable achievement unfolded at Utah on December 30. Jokic delivered a standout performance with 36 points, 22 rebounds, and 11 assists, while Westbrook contributed with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. This feat was not only a testament to their individual prowess but also highlighted their synergy on the court.
Jokic continued to build on his exceptional form, registering 35 points, 15 assists, and 12 rebounds, marking his NBA-leading 15th triple-double of the season. Meanwhile, Westbrook's performance was equally impressive, as he dished out four crucial assists in the fourth quarter to secure his 202nd career triple-double. Both players made history by becoming the first duo to record a 25-point triple-double in the same regular-season game.
Denver's head coach, Michael Malone, expressed his admiration for the historical achievement.
"Wow. That's pretty crazy. We're watching history, folks," – Denver coach Michael Malone
Westbrook's contribution was pivotal as he went to the bench late in the third quarter, just one rebound shy of his 145th career triple-double. At that point, the Nuggets held an 18-point lead. Westbrook wrapped up with 25 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists, marking his third triple-double of the season and his first in Denver. His precise shooting stood out as he made all seven of his shot attempts and both free throw attempts without committing any turnovers.
Jokic's return to form was notable as he had missed the previous two games due to illness before returning against the Nets. Westbrook credited coach Malone for providing him with the freedom to play his game, which undoubtedly contributed to his outstanding performance.
