Johnson Aims to Shift Bears QB Narrative with Williams

There’s no doubt that Chicago Bears Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson is looking to rewrite the narrative surrounding QB Caleb Williams. Together, they are in the process of deepening their developing chemistry on the court. Williams has made no secret of his desire for more accountability and tougher coaching. He’s yet to comment publicly since a bombshell book chapter revealed the struggles he faced through what was his own rookie season.

For one, Williams last year wasn’t shy in calling for stricter coaching hand-holding. He issued a clarion call for more accountability, something that Johnson wholeheartedly agrees with. Johnson knows firsthand that developing rapport and mutual trust is critical to successful coaching. He understands that this is a process that needs time to mature.

>Caleb is his own man.” Johnson said, adding that Williams has a distinct style to his game. Johnson’s comments to the bond committee remind us that respect and knowledge are crucial to any partnership. He referred to the first four months with Williams as “exceeding expectations.” Their connection is deepening more and more each day.

During his rookie season, Williams found himself studying film on his own terms, sometimes without any clear direction from coaches themselves. This saving grace probably contributed to the disjointing he experienced with former offensive coordinator Shane Waldron. Waldron was let go in early November. As noted by veteran football journalist Seth Wickersham, this conceptual disconnect is the subject of Wickersham’s recent book. It doesn’t just illustrate more systemic, fundamental issues with the team’s coaching staff.

In January, Johnson was brought on by the Bears following that organization’s 5-12 season in 2024. He believes that this new chapter presents a critical opportunity for change and transformational growth. I really love the opportunity to come on in and change that narrative. That’s where great stories are written. So, we’re looking to write a new chapter here – 2025 Chicago Bears – and looking forward to the future,” he remarked.

Williams’ dream was getting drafted by the Minnesota Vikings. His father, Carl Williams, was less enthused about the Bears franchise. He liked to warn that Chicago was where “quarterbacks go to die.” Despite these reservations, Johnson and Williams are now intent on moving past these issues and forging a new and successful future together.

Looking ahead, both are focused on deepening their partnership and working through some of the challenges that developed last season. Each passing day, Johnson’s confidence in Williams increases. As one unit, they can’t wait for the season to begin, looking to show all the doubters they’re a better team than advertised.
