Joe Root’s Century Marks a Defining Moment in Australian Test Cricket

Joe Root’s recent triple century was simply one of the best cricket performances ever, and it will leave the biggest imprint even after the last ball is bowled. The experienced batsman didn’t flinch one bit during his most recent knock down in Perth. In doing so, he left an indelible impression with an incredible combination of talent and toughness. This new century continues to add to his remarkable legacy. It not only makes history—it cements his status as one of cricket’s all-time greats.

Root is currently in Perth having touched down last month. He was keen to leave a mark after having not scored an international century on Australian soil for two years. Of course, his most recent innings had been laced with anguish, the Australasian wait for a Root century extending well beyond its sell by date. This match proved to be a turning point, as Root’s steadfast approach to batting resulted in a graceful 135 runs, propelling England’s hopes for a first win in Brisbane since 1986.

The innings did not start out easy for Root, who was almost out on his very first stroke. One that Australian bowler Mitchell Starc nearly got the wicket with that went inches from second slip fielder/captain Steve Smith’s hands. This lapse provided the platform for a truly transformative blow by Root. Though rattled, he held together well and regained his accuracy almost instantly. As soon as he moved beyond the three-figure mark, he freed himself up, showcasing a dominating control on the crease.

Root’s first hundred runs came through a methodical approach, primarily targeting the ‘V’ down the ground. This strategy contributed to the highest percentage of runs scored in any of his 16 centuries away from home, emphasizing his ability to adapt and capitalize on scoring opportunities. Notably, as he progressed into his second fifty runs, Root displayed a more cautious demeanor, attacking less frequently while still accumulating runs efficiently.

Root’s stretch of 16 straight non-wins in Tests down under since his maiden tour in 2013-14. This performance really underscores his incredible luck in winning during such a difficult time to win. Despite these challenges, Root’s innings of the series so far could have turned the tide. It has surprisingly invigorated England’s chances and awoken more positive feelings among his would-be teammates.

It hasn’t been a smooth path for Root. Earlier on in the series, he experienced a challenge when he went to the hospital after being injured. This was the case during the day-night Test in Adelaide. Even despite these disappointments, he’s shown an undeniable passion for his squad and the game. As Root approaches his 39th birthday, he knows the pressure is on. The urn, after all, will soon be making its regular return to this country for renewed competition — feeding his urgency to find success.
