Joe Dumars Returns Home as New EVP of Basketball Operations for Pelicans

One of the most revered figures in all of sports, Joe Dumars has been given an incredibly alluring job. He is currently the head of basketball operations for the New Orleans Pelicans. On Wednesday, the franchise went all-in with an even bigger announcement. This move to proactive management shows they are serious about doing better and understanding what comes next.

Dumars adds depth of experience to the Pelicans. From 2019 to 2022 he held the position of chief strategy officer for the Sacramento Kings. His resume runs deep from his time working in the NBA league office. Since 2022, he’s been the league’s executive vice president of basketball operations and has been instrumental in the development of the league. His rich background in different roles throughout the league stresses his holistic grasp of basketball operations.

Dumars was a major influence. He was chief executive of the Detroit Pistons from 2000 to 2014. During his time with the Pistons he won the Executive of the Year award in 2003. He was responsible for assembling the core of that championship squad that brought the first Purple Row banner in 2004. He won the summer on all fronts, successfully recruiting Billups and other key players to leverage the situation. He made shrewd trades for stars like Rasheed Wallace, Ben Wallace, and Rip Hamilton and drafted Tayshaun Prince. Those choices propelled the Pistons to extraordinary heights. During that latter streak, they had at least 50 wins in seven consecutive seasons from 2001-02 to 2007-08.

Dumars is perhaps most famous for his unique dual accomplishment as an NBA player and executive, respectively. This is understandable, as he was drafted by the Pistons in 1985 and spent his entire 14-year playing career with the team. The 6-foot-8 Olympic shooting guard helped anchor Team USA’s suffocating defense. His contributions were instrumental in the “Bad Boys” winning NBA titles in 1989 and 1990. His visibility and influence in the league extends well beyond his playing days. He’s built incredible alliances all over the league from players to executives.

Going back to his home state of Louisiana is an incredible and surprising full circle moment in Dumars’ career. Along with his leadership qualities, his enormous network will be best put to use ensuring the Pelicans take the right steps forward and build a real contender. They need to get a leg up on the competition in their race for success. Dumars has made clear that he wants to establish a “no-excuses mindset” in the organization. Beyond wins and losses, his focus is on bringing accountability, a culture of hard work and professionalism to players and staff.

Given the difficulties the Pelicans have encountered in recent years, Dumars’ experience and established track record should be a notable asset. He’s really good at spotting great talent. His expertise will be important as the franchise continues to work through the intricacies of individual player acquisitions and overall team development plans.
