The New York Jets on Friday activated defensive end Jermaine Johnson from the physical unable to perform (PUP) list. This move was desperately needed to add a big boost to their defensive line. Johnson, a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, ruptured his right Achilles on September 15 against the Tennessee Titans. This injury kept him out of action for almost a year.
Johnson’s return is important for the Jets. They’ve missed fellow defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, who’s been out with a strained calf since July 31. Williams is nearing a return to practice but is not expected back for another week or two. Johnson’s on-field rehabilitation has been wildly followed as he approached his return to the field.
Ever since the offseason, Coach Aaron Glenn has been a very optimistic person when it came to Johnson’s preparation. “He’s going through the protocol of getting himself ready,” Glenn stated, highlighting the player’s commitment to his recovery. Johnson has shown commitment, the team has their eyes set on making sure he has long-term health.

Through the first three games, Johnson was proving to be an immense impact player. Proving to make a huge impact on the Jets’ defensive domination, in the 2023 season he tallied 7.5 sacks. His breakout 2013 season vaulted him to a Pro Bowl berth after being named as an injury replacement. This major accomplishment only sheds more light on his tremendous worth to the team.
As training camp continued, Johnson was expected to be prepared for the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He just came off of PUP, meaning he’s well on his way to doing just that. This addition continues to add depth to the Jets overall defensive core as they prepare for what lies ahead.
