New York Jets rookie Zach Cook is preparing for his first NFL start. He faces the Jacksonville Jaguars this weekend. Cook signed with the Jets immediately after the NFL draft. In doing so, he becomes the first non-drafted rookie quarterback to start on behalf of the team since 1975. This milestone, though, serves to recognize not only Cook’s journey, but the team’s belief in what he can do.
Cook has won the starting job since Tyrod Taylor was placed on IR with a groin injury. The last game, Taylor was only able to play two series before being forced to leave. Cook came in during the last preseason game and showed why he’s so darn special. As a quarterback, he led an inexperienced team on making plays and rising to the challenge. He got a complete load of first-team practice reps all week, setting him up even better for the challenge ahead.
Cook has only attempted 30 passes in his career, but so far, he’s turning heads of his coaches in New York. His unique competitiveness and decision-making ability make him special. Last week, he hit just 14 of his 30 attempts, tossing for only 163 yards. He threw two picks during a brutal 34-10 defeat to the Miami Dolphins. His dominating performance laid the groundwork for his next start. From practice-squad player to team leader on the field, he is making the move that excites all fans.
Cook admits that understandably before a big game, there is likely to be some nerves. He expressed his feelings about the upcoming challenge, stating, “I think (nerves are) a part of the game. I’ve been nervous before any football game I’ve ever played. I’m excited. It’s important. This is everything I’ve ever done. So there’s a level of importance there that’s going to create nerves, but whenever I drag out onto the field and take that first snap, it’s gone, it’s not there. You’re focused, because you have no other choice. You really don’t.”
The Jets coaching staff has backed Cook with steadfast confidence. Coach Glenn remarked on Cook’s dedication in preparation for this moment, saying, “He’s been studying his butt off for this moment.” He further emphasized his confidence in Cook by stating, “I have all the confidence in the world (in Cook).”
Cook enters this new, important role against the Jaguars, with expectations fairly high. He parallels this with the unquestioned confidence of a coaching staff that knows what he can do. The 3-3 Longhorns will offer a true test for the rookie quarterback. We can’t wait to see what mark he makes on the NFL!
