Garrett Wilson, the New York Jets’ top wide receiver, underwent an MRI on Monday, revealing that he avoided a serious knee injury sustained late in Sunday’s 13-11 loss to the Denver Broncos in London. MRI results brought Wilson reassurance. Though he could return even by mid-November, he’d still be expected to require a significant rehab period to recuperate from said injury.
Wilson, the 34 th overall pick in 2022, ranked 12th in defensive player WAR last season. He has been key to the Jets offense this year, having never missed an NFL game. His leadership and command of the room will be missed. They literally just set a franchise record by throwing for a minus-10 net passing yards and failing to score a touchdown against the Denver Broncos. The Jets are still reeling from their shocking upset defeat and eager to bounce back.
Coach Aaron Glenn noted the importance of Wilson to the team, saying, “It’s always a concern when you lose one of your better players, I will say that.” Consequently, this statement from the Hall of Fame highlights the importance of Wilson’s contributions to the game during his playing days.
With Wilson still sidelined, Josh Reynolds becomes the de facto next-closest wide receiver to the top of the depth chart. This season, he’s only caught eight balls for 72 yards. The Jets need to find a killer game plan to make up for Wilson’s loss, and fast. If he is unable to play for the long-term, then the effect will be much more profound.
There is optimism that Wilson could be back following the team’s bye week. The Jets next play host to the Cleveland Browns on November 9. With one eye on their own team’s recovery, fans are waiting to hear daily from Wilson as they prepare for the championship.
