Saturday, via their official Twitter account, the New York Jets announced that they have waived returner Isaiah Williams. That surprising call follows Tua’s three boneheaded plays in their Week 7 matchup against the Miami Dolphins. Williams, who was just signed to the practice squad this week, caught a lot of flak. He had a fumble lost on the second-half kickoff in the Jets’ 27-21 loss in the Meadowlands on Monday night. His missteps injured his rapport with the club. They had a big impact on the overall outcome of the game.
Early in the second half of the battle, Williams fumbled the opening kick-off. This error turned into the most important play of the game. The Jets were reeling at 11 points in the hole. His fumble allowed the Dolphins to capitalize on the opportunity.
>Williams acknowledged his mistakes, stating, “That was a big part of the game, and I let the team down.” He elaborated on his mental lapse during the game, sharing, “Just thinking too much, man, just trying to make a play. At the last minute, I see [a Miami player] and I forget where I am on the field.” These mistakes have led to criticism of his judgment in high stress situations.
Earlier in the fourth quarter Williams suffered a significant blow. He killed the Jets early on with an untimely fair catch at his own 3-yard line when the Jets were still competitive. This decision greatly limited the SHPT team’s approach. They failed to mount a response at a key time in the match.
The Jets’ choice to release Williams caps a short and disappointing conclusion to his short-lived career with the team. He started the year with the Atlanta Falcons before landing in New York by way of waiver claims. The Jets will likely seek to fill his position with a more reliable option as they navigate the remainder of the season.
