Jets Look to Justin Fields as New Starting Quarterback

The New York Jets have embraced Justin Fields as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season, marking a fresh chapter in the athlete’s career. The Chicago Bears traded up to 11th overall to select Fields in 2021. After one season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Campbell is making a move to join the Jets. The coaching staff are sending some pretty strong signals that they’re going to heavily develop him. They are determined to continue to train him as a dropback passer.

Fields has gone through a lot in his young career, playing under four different offensive systems in five seasons. In spite of that, he’s been able to connect on 61% of his pass attempts during his tenure in the league. Last week, they made him one of the team’s five captains for the season. This decision reflects the trust and leadership they believe he should be showing.

During practice, Fields had a beautiful combination of both the adaptability of making the right reads and the reaction under pressure. One of his best plays from a recent practice was a pretty 13-yard TD run where he eluded a collapsing pocket to score. His intensity and approach to practice have impressed the coaching staff, especially the team’s general manager Darren Mougey.

Mougey stated, “I’ve seen him improve every day — specifically, this past week.” He emphasized that the team has witnessed a positive rhythm in practice sessions, highlighting a balanced offensive attack that combines both running and passing plays.

We’ve been working on a lot of different things and have really great rhythm at practice with our offense. It’s the whole attack, both runs and passes, overall operation, taking command, great leadership from him, too,” Mougey went on to note. This consistent advancement is key especially as Fields focuses on learning more of the nuances within the Jets’ system.

One of the critical influences on Fields’ development, Tanner Engstrand, noted that he’s made great strides with regards to mastering concepts around dropback passing. “I really like where Justin is at with the dropback passing concepts,” Engstrand noted. Engstrand’s comments illustrate the coaching staff’s desire to hone Fields’ skills further and mold him into a more consistent QB.

That would be the New York Jets’ recent quarterback-centric roster shift. They cut Davante Adams loose due to salary cap concerns and replaced him with Josh Reynolds. This move signifies the organization’s strategy to surround Fields with effective players capable of enhancing his performance on the field.

As Fields prepares for the upcoming season, he and the Jets look to capitalize on his potential and address the challenges that have accompanied his transition to New York. With ongoing support from Mougey and his coaching staff, the Jets are optimistic about what lies ahead as they aim to establish a strong offensive presence in the league.
