New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd was still in critical but stable condition as of Friday night. He died from a gunshot wound on Sunday morning. The crash took place just after 2 a.m. ET in front of a restaurant on West 38th Street in New York City’s busy Midtown Manhattan area.
Boyd, currently in his first season with the Jets, was shot twice in the abdomen. According to the official statement from the New York Police Department given after the incident, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) transported him to Bellevue Hospital. He got acute care right there.
At 29 years old, Boyd has enjoyed a somewhat unconventional NFL career so far. The Minnesota Vikings selected him in the seventh round in 2019. He gave that team four wonderful seasons. Along with his tenure in Minnesota, Boyd has spent time with the Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans. He signed a one-year, $1.6 million contract with the Jets in free agency this summer.
Before this unfortunate turn of events, Boyd’s season came to an unexpected stop. He posted news of a serious shoulder injury he received in the NFL preseason that was supposedly season-ending. The Jets’ organization and fans had been anticipating his contributions on the field, once he got healed up.
After the shooting, teammate Jermaine Johnson did not hold back on how he felt about Boyd and his family.
“Everybody please send prayers to my brother and teammate Kris Boyd and his family!!! Lord please hold your healing hand over Kris and guide him back to health and safety,” – Jermaine Johnson
At the time of writing, the New York Jets organization has not put out any sort of official statement regarding Boyd’s condition or the accident. They are on the hook to release updates as further information becomes available.
