Jessica Pegula, a Buffalo native and rising star in women’s tennis, continues to capture the hearts of fans as she prepares for the upcoming US Open. During her run to the finals in 2022, Pegula went toe to toe with Aryna Sabalenka, losing in two tightly contested sets. Today, she proudly welcomes the opportunity to put her beloved hometown upon this celebrated stage. Her journey in tennis is deeply intertwined with her family’s story and the strong connection she shares with the Buffalo Bills, the city’s beloved football team.
Pegula’s love for New York and the US Open is palpable. She recalls her time on the stage of Arthur Ashe Stadium, the largest arena in the world’s most famous tournament, as an experience like no other. She insists the energy at the US Open is “really honestly unmatched.” This is especially the case for an American athlete racing on home soil in New York City. This lively environment stokes her competitive fire and drives her to want to compete and play her best.
A Family Legacy
The athlete’s relationship with Buffalo runs deeper than her hometown roots. In June of 2022, it would be her family who faced unprecedented difficulties. Her mother, Kim Pegula, fell into a cardiac arrest and was rushed to the hospital. The experience impacted the family deeply and united them while simultaneously strengthening Jessica’s resolve toward her sport and her family.
Reflecting on her experiences, Pegula stated, “And even though tennis will always come second to family, at the same time, I felt like it prepared me and helped me navigate and learn so many different challenges – and it still continues to this day.” This mindset has influenced her philosophy in tennis, focusing on the strength and tenacity developed from her own journey.
The support of her family and community plays a pivotal role in Pegula’s career. She acknowledges that being from Buffalo, where tennis does not dominate the sports scene, has allowed her to cultivate a unique fan base that overlaps with that of the Buffalo Bills. The Bills’ supporters cheer her on during her matches, creating an exciting crossover effect that enriches her experience as an athlete.
Bridging Two Sports
With her success and likeable personality, Jessica Pegula has quickly risen to become a beloved figure among both tennis fans and Buffalonians. She enjoys the dynamic interaction between the two sports, noting how Bills fans feel a connection to her success on the tennis court. “They feel like they have to root for me, but it’s still much fun and being able to hopefully make a lot of football fans tennis fans, which I think is really cool,” Pegula said.
That ripple effect enhances her competitive success in the tourney. What’s more, on home games she has to get used to chants of “Go Bills” ringing around the stands during her matches. Pegula appreciates the support and strives to connect with Bills fans, stating, “I love being able to connect with Bills fans.”
As she continues to chart her career in the world of professional tennis, Pegula knows that her sport teaches important life lessons. Her commitment to the game as well as her strong family values and support system keep her pushing for success and greatness on and off the court.
Looking Ahead
Now with plenty of experience and wisdom behind Jessica Pegula as she sets her sights on a second US Open title, the future looks bright. She’s particularly excited about taking home the big prize in New York. She describes it as “one of the most fun” and expresses her gratitude for the opportunity to share her talents on such a huge stage.
Pegula said competing in New York City was as special as it gets. Going deep into the competition and achieving good results further fosters that experience. Their participation is not just the goal. With her unique blend of talent, determination, and community support, she aims to make a lasting impact during this year’s tournament.
