Charles Perchard, the 33-year-old captain of Jersey’s national cricket team, is clear on his squad’s ability to cause an upset. Just as Sri Lanka are getting ready for their path to the 2027 Cricket World Cup, Jersey are coming off an exciting last-ball victory over Scotland this July in The Hague. This nail-biting victory has fueled anticipation of the team’s dreams for a record-breaking season.
In that pivotal game, Perchard, or “Chuggy,” as he’s known, was his team’s orchestrator. He carried his side over the line in a dramatic one-wicket win, claiming a famous scalp. Yet this last space victory truly showcased this team’s resiliency. More importantly still, it underlined their development from the years that have passed since Perchard debuted in 2010.
Perchard lauded the exceptional efforts of his foremost fast bowlers, George Richardson and Julius Sumerauer. He praised spinner Josh Lawrenson who took 4-25 in the first innings. He acknowledged their contributions, stating, “Our spin attack were right on the money for the whole week, making it really difficult for them to score.”
Reflecting on the team’s recent successes and future ambitions, Perchard noted, “The talent levels are through the roof and the desire is great to see.” He added that hard work and dedication was needed to keep competing in a small cricketing nation such as Jersey. “One of the beauties of being part of a small nation like Jersey is that we really have to work hard for each other,” he said.
With Jersey looking ahead and preparing into the next round of qualifying matches, Perchard has specific standards already in mind. He conveyed that the team will be disappointed if they do not achieve four or five wins in their upcoming fixtures. “It’s not just about finishing in the top two. We’ll be disappointed if we don’t win four or five games in the next round,” he asserted.
Perchard went on to say that the mood around the sim team was serious, hard-working and tense. What’s changed is that we’ve learned to measure these conditions and experiences a whole lot better. The professionalism has sky rocketed, the level of training has really upped,” he said. The rugby squad practices two to three times a week and builds an incredible culture of teamwork and development.
Jersey’s recent performances have not only restored morale but expectations jersey to achieve future success. Perchard stated, “The sky is the limit for the guys. I’ve got so much confidence that this team are going to achieve something special.”
In their last game against Qatar to date, Jersey wowed everyone when they knocked them all out for a mere 132 runs after losing the toss. Perchard attributed this resounding win to the players’ tactical execution. “To roll them for 132 after they’d won the toss was a great effort on a really flat pitch,” he noted. And for that, the captain commended his batters for an aggressive approach. He added, “Batters were brutal, clinical and ruthless – just what we preach as a team.” They completed it in double-quick time, a Herculean achievement.
As Jersey continues its preparations through the winter and into next summer, Perchard’s leadership will be crucial in guiding the team toward achieving its aspirations for World Cup qualification.
