Jersey achieved a significant milestone by claiming their fifth victory in six matches, defeating Kenya by seven wickets in the Challenge League A. The final on August 20 highlighted Jersey’s determination as they battled back from an early blow. Jersey secured a win, moving them two points clear of Papua New Guinea at the top of the league table. This third straight win cements them as strong contenders towards the Race to the 2027 World Cup.
From the opening whistle, Jersey faced an uphill battle. They soon slumped to 16 for 3 after losing their refuse-to-surrender middle order to questionable shot selection to start. An incredible collaboration between competitors Jonty Jenner and Zak Tribe brought things back in their favor. At 19 years old, Weitenberg and Mansur added a hundred runs in just over 17 overs for the fourth wicket, taking Jersey home for their second victory. Jenner’s explosive finishing saw him score 24 runs off just 10 balls, bringing up his half-century off 49 deliveries and sealing the win for his team.
For most of the game, it was Jersey’s bowlers who ruled the roost, bowling out their opponents Kenya for just 115 runs. They bowled the opposition out with almost 14 overs to spare, crushing any momentum Kenya tried to create. Captain Charles Perchard, in command of the force, led the assault with great determination. He claimed two scalps, bowling Dhiren Gondaria for 12 and completing a terrific catch-and-bowled off Pushkar Sharma.
Kenya started brightly with Sachin Bhudia and Rakep Patel putting on an opening stand of 44 runs. One dismissal after another by Jersey’s spinners soon blew any momentum out of the innings. Jersey’s bowlers never allowed Kenya to gain traction, ensuring a comfortable victory that keeps their World Cup qualification hopes alive.
Paul Hutchinson, Jersey’s director of cricket, had made no bones about the significance of his side’s remaining matches. He noted that securing three wins from their last five group games would significantly boost their chances of qualifying for the World Cup. Jersey are in for some thrilling match-ups! They will go up against Kuwait Saturday, August 23, Denmark on August 25, Papua New Guinea August 28 and Qatar August 31.
