Jerry Kelly celebrates winning the Mitsubishi Electric Classic. It was a big victory for Moore as it was his 13th career victory on the PGA Tour Champions. The tournament played out at TPC Sugarloaf. Tied for the lead entering the final day with fellow starter Ernie Els, Kelly put on a show. His closing score of 5-under 67 left him an impressive 20-under 196 for the tournament. He clinched his win by making birdies on two of the last four holes. This incredible shotmaking was enough for him to beat Els by a single stroke.
Ernie Els, who had debuted the tournament by opening at the longer layout with back-to-back 65-64 was finishing strong. And then, birdie-ing the last hole, he capped a 68 with that flourish. This dazzling exhibition of golf left him at 19-under overall. But after a courageous run at the title, Els was unable to seal the deal, losing to Kelly by one stroke.
Steven Alker rounded out the top three after an electric run through the brackets. He capped his event at 16-under after providing an electric final round of 65. Alker had begun the tournament with an impressive opening round of 62 on Friday and followed up with a 67 on Saturday.
Okay, Ángel Cabrera went on a late kick to finish fourth but still, 15-under won. He finished his final round in style with a crisp 68. Vijay Singh was a distant fifth. He ended at 13-under after a final round 70.
The Mitsubishi Electric Classic was about more than just the golf, with footage revealing the competitive bonds that form between players. Jerry Kelly’s third consecutive win cements his growing legacy. It cements his reputation as one of the best players on the PGA Tour Champions circuit.
