The New York Giants have done nothing but indicate Jaxson Dart is in line to be the backup quarterback. He’ll back up Russell Wilson as they’d appear on their first regular season depth chart. This announcement comes on the heels of a summer filled with dazzling performances from the 22-year-old rookie. He impressed at a young age at Ole Miss before being selected as the 25th overall pick in this year’s draft.
Dart’s rise to No. 2 overall is indicative of the drastic change in the team’s lineup this season. He has officially passed veteran Jameis Winston, who was the second string quarterback throughout the entire preseason. Dart took nearly all second-team reps all summer. He proved his potential by dominating the later-practice second-team offense.
Dart’s success during training camp serves as proof of his constant development. He finished the preseason hitting on 32 of 47 attempts (68.1 percent) for 372 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Additionally, he showcased his mobility by rushing for a touchdown, further solidifying his position as a promising talent for the Giants.
The Giants took a calculated risk when they re-entered the first round of this draft to take Dart. His stellar summer campaign has shown that they indeed made the correct call. It seems like the coaching staff, spearheaded by head coach Brian Daboll, trusts Dart to maintain that trajectory in the long term. His success will be in large part what determines whether or not Daboll is leading the franchise in the long term.
Despite Dart’s ascension on the depth chart, Coach Daboll has refrained from confirming who will serve as Wilson’s backup when the Giants open their season on Sunday.
“Any roster decisions based on who’s going to be in the backup or who this player is going to be, we’ll have that out there on Sunday.” – Brian Daboll
Meanwhile, the Giants have been preparing for their own season opener. All eyes’ll be on Dart to see if he can build on his momentum and carry the team’s resurgence. This intriguing young quarterback has displayed some serious positive signs during the preseason. Today, he walks into a key role for a franchise eager to return to prominence.
