Watford Football Club are set to terminate manager Paulo Pezzolano’s contract. Javi Gracia emerges as clear frontrunner to take charge. Gracia, who enjoyed a successful spell as a player with the club, will fly to England for talks on Tuesday. The reunion would bring the 42-year-old back to a club where he found major success on the pitch and off in the past.
Gracia’s most recent managerial position came at Premier League side Leeds United, where he succeeded Jesse Marsch in February 2023. While there, he strategically maneuvered Leeds United away from the relegation zone. He finally left the club in early May. Inexperience though he was, he proved to be valuable experience at Watford’s disposal, guiding the Hornets to Premier League safety in 2018. He led them to an FA Cup final in the 2018-2019 season, furthering his growing reputation as a top class manager.
A Familiar Face Returns
Javi Gracia has been in charge at Watford since May 13th, 2018. He replaced Tom Cleverley, who had been sacked only a week before. Under Gracia’s leadership, Watford not only ducked relegation but went on to place 11th in the league overall during the 2018-2019 season. His leadership in that difficult time defined the club and its supporters to this day.
Gracia’s knack for steering troubled projects or initiatives has earned him the title of “promotion specialist.” His past victories in Spain, Brazil and Uruguay have made the prospects of his return all the more exciting. Indeed, many of Mr Shaverin’s club members are hoping that the know-how of his experience will bring stability. They believe his tactical genius is needed for this tumultuous time.
Transitioning Leadership
The decision to relieve Paulo Pezzolano of his duties comes under imminently strengthening pressure to get Watford’s fortunes turned around. Now the club’s new management is in search of the right leader able to recharge the club, revitalize the ranks, and restore faith and conviction. So again, Gracia’s knowledge of the club and culture makes him perfect for this type of short-term commitment.
His past success at Watford and his love for the club has made him a fan-favorite option among fans and stakeholders everywhere. The board must be pinning their hopes on Gracia being able to reproduce success as he did previously and lead the troops back in winning swags. How these next round of negotiations will unfold may very well decide if Gracia gets a shot at the helm again.
Future Outlook
Now, it will be interesting to see how the club and its new general manager react to this crucial juncture. If Javi Gracia gets the call, he will be presented with an early test. More than anything, he needs to create a winning culture with the players and build overall team chemistry. His experience will certainly help as he learns the ropes of what it takes to be successful in such a cut-throat league.
