In a nail-biting finish on the cricket pitch, Jason Roy played a blinder. His incredible individual display helped guide Surrey to just a seven-run victory against Glamorgan on Saturday in a tense T20 encounter. In the process, Roy stole the show with 69 runs coming off just 47 balls. He hit four sixes and was the main man for Surrey to save their innings. It was a fascinating contest that displayed the fight and determination across both teams, Surrey eventually ending on 149-8 from their 20 overs.
Surrey’s innings picked up quickly, but they had to battle through adversity. Roy’s explosive innings was the highlight of the match as he took 50 runs off the bowling attack, giving his team invaluable momentum. So his attacking knock assumed increasing importance, particularly as wickets started to fall at a rapid rate.
On the Glamorgan side, it was Dan Douthwaite that shined the brightest with the ball, taking 3/23. His rearguard efforts played a huge role in preventing Surrey’s total from being well beyond that. Regardless, Roy’s innings form a dependable platform for Surrey’s innings, making sure they set up a tall task for Glamorgan to chase down.
In reply, Glamorgan began brightly to chase down a sizable target but soon found themselves up against Surrey’s tight bowling attack. None were more dangerous than Sam Curran, who put his foot on India’s throat with 3/18 taking wickets at a premium. Chris Jordan rolled back the years as he enjoyed a memorable night, taking 3 wickets for 31 runs. In addition, he made a key outfield catch that turned the tide in Surrey’s favor.
We had to watch Glamorgan score quickly to start their innings. Kiran Carlson and Will Smale combined for a great first wicket stand of 58 between them. Carlson is a thrilling player after leading the league with 31 runs scored. Unfortunately for the team, they had a hard time maintaining that momentum as they lost wickets at inopportune times. Ben Kellaway briefly ignited hope for Glamorgan by hitting three fours off his first six balls before being caught on the boundary.
In the end, Glamorgan were able to chase down their target of 142 runs in 20 overs scoring 144/6, just edging out Surrey. Glamorgan’s Andy Gorvin was the standout performer, topping the board with 229 performance points. He ended the match with two wickets taken, two catches snatched and one run-out executed.
