Jason Day Adjusts Outfits at Masters Following Augusta National’s Request

Jason Day, the Australian former world No. 1 golfer, is the talk of the week at the Masters this week. His impact extends well past his play in between the ropes. Day became part of Malbon Golf’s crew earlier this year. He showed up to Augusta National with a trunk full of fire looks in preparation for the storied tournament. After being told that his clothes were inappropriate, he changed his style to fit the aesthetic demanded by the theatre in which he was performing.

Day, who turned 37 this year, was making his 14th appearance at the Masters this week. He certainly left an indelible mark with a runner-up finish in his first appearance back in 2011. After a day of colorful outfits on Thursday, Augusta National officials had to ask his group of influencers to tone down their attire. Admitting that he perhaps dressed a little too ostentatiously at first, he asserted that the wardrobe is important.

“We prepared in advance for the tournament, but we downplayed everything and kept it very minimalistic, very basic, very simple—which really isn’t true.” —Greg Day on his attire planning

After the first round, Day was willing to adjust his clothing so he wouldn’t be seen as a distraction. He showed up for the semi finals without the vest on. That vest had said “Malbon Golf Championship” across the front in about a triple A-sized block letter.

We had to send it in. But I may be the only one on the short list of guys that have to submit their scripting in advance now. I get it. It was a touch overboard on Thursday,” he said.

Even with the overdue amendments, Day remains concentrated on his craft. We know that even he fully appreciates what it means to keep things classy at an event of that magnitude. “It’s good. I understand. We’re here for the tournament,” he added.

On Friday, Day finished 18 holes right next to golfing legend Tiger Woods. The ready-made, traditional Augusta crowd buzzed with excitement to see how he would bend to the sartorial dictates laid down by the Augusta National chessmasters. Maybe his costume choices started some uncomfortable, but necessary dialogue. Yet, despite everything, Day is more committed than ever to thriving in one of golf’s most cherished majors.
